What is crypto posture management?
Your crypto posture is the current state of all the cryptography your organisation relies on: which algorithms, key sizes, protocols, certificates and libraries are in use, where they are, who owns them and how strong they are. Crypto posture management keeps that picture accurate and moves it in the right direction. It works as a continuous loop:
- Discover: find cryptographic assets across cloud, on-prem, applications and vendors.
- Assess: evaluate each against policy, including deprecated algorithms, weak keys and quantum vulnerability.
- Prioritise: score by business impact, data sensitivity and exposure.
- Remediate: assign owners, track fixes and enforce policy.
- Prove: report posture and progress to leadership, auditors and customers.
Why cryptographic posture needs continuous management
- Cryptography is everywhere and mostly invisible. It lives inside open-source libraries, cloud services, appliances and SaaS platforms, and few teams know its full extent.
- The quantum transition is years long. A PQC migration needs an inventory that stays accurate throughout, not a snapshot that goes stale.
- Posture drifts. Every new service, dependency update or vendor onboarding can reintroduce weak or quantum-vulnerable cryptography.
- Regulators want evidence. PCI DSS v4.0 requirement 12.3.3, DORA's cryptographic controls, US federal inventory mandates and national PQC roadmaps all expect a maintained inventory and a demonstrable plan.
- Crypto-agility depends on it. You cannot swap algorithms quickly if you do not know where they are.
Core capabilities of a CPM platform
Unified cryptographic inventory
A continuously updated inventory across cloud environments, enterprise systems and software vendors, with dependency mapping and export to formats such as CycloneDX CBOM.
Third-party and SaaS vendor coverage
Much of your cryptographic exposure sits with vendors that process your data. A CPM platform brings their cryptography into the same view as your own.
Risk scoring and prioritisation
Findings are ranked by business impact, data sensitivity, exposure and quantum vulnerability, so teams fix what matters first instead of working through a flat list.
Policy and remediation governance
Define allowed algorithms and key sizes, assign owners, track remediation to closure and flag regressions when posture drifts.
Audit-ready reporting
Show auditors, regulators, customers and the board your posture and its trend over time, not just a point-in-time report.
CPM vs. CSPM vs. certificate management
| Category | Scope | Primary job |
|---|---|---|
| Crypto posture management (CPM) | All cryptography: algorithms, keys, certificates, protocols, libraries and vendors | Continuous inventory, risk scoring, PQC readiness, remediation governance |
| Certificate lifecycle management (CLM) | X.509 certificates | Issuance, renewal, expiry and revocation |
| Cloud security posture management (CSPM) | Cloud resource configuration | Misconfiguration detection in cloud accounts |
| Key management (KMS / HSM) | Keys held in the KMS or HSM | Secure key storage and cryptographic operations |
These tools complement each other. CLM, KMS and CSPM findings are all inputs to crypto posture management, which is the layer that shows the whole picture and governs it.
Crypto posture metrics to track
- Inventory coverage: the share of systems and vendors with known cryptography
- Quantum-vulnerable assets, split by risk tier
- Share of priority traffic protected by hybrid or post-quantum key exchange
- Deprecated algorithms and weak key sizes still in use
- Mean time to remediate cryptographic findings
- Vendors with a documented PQC roadmap
- Overall quantum readiness maturity level
PQCLayer: the cryptographic control plane
PQCLayer is crypto posture management built for regulated organisations. It is designed around three layers:
- Inventory Layer: a complete, structured cryptographic asset inventory across cloud, enterprise systems and software vendors.
- Decision Layer: contextual risk prioritisation based on impact, sensitivity and exposure.
- Control Layer: continuous tracking, policy enforcement, remediation management and audit reports.

Frequently asked questions
What is crypto posture management?
Crypto posture management (CPM), also called cryptographic posture management, is the continuous practice of discovering every use of cryptography across an organisation and its vendors, assessing each one against policy and quantum risk, prioritising the findings by business impact, and tracking remediation with audit-ready evidence. It does for cryptography what CSPM does for cloud configuration.
How is crypto posture management different from certificate lifecycle management?
Certificate lifecycle management (CLM) issues, renews and revokes certificates. Crypto posture management covers far more: algorithms and key sizes in code, libraries, protocols, TLS configurations, keys, HSM and KMS usage, and the cryptography third-party vendors use. It also scores risk and governs remediation. CLM is one input to CPM, not a replacement for it.
How is crypto posture management different from CSPM?
Cloud security posture management (CSPM) checks cloud resource configurations against best practice. Crypto posture management focuses specifically on cryptographic assets and their strength, including quantum vulnerability, and spans cloud, on-prem systems, applications and SaaS vendors rather than a single cloud control plane.
Why does crypto posture management matter for post-quantum cryptography?
A PQC migration takes years and new vulnerable cryptography keeps entering through new services, dependencies and vendors. Crypto posture management provides the continuous inventory, prioritisation and progress tracking that turn a one-off migration project into a controlled, provable programme.
What is a CBOM?
A Cryptography Bill of Materials (CBOM) is a machine-readable list of the cryptographic assets in a system: algorithms, keys, certificates, protocols and their properties. CycloneDX 1.6 added native CBOM support. A CBOM is a common output of a crypto posture management platform.
